Hiring: Graphic Design & Communications Specialist

Remote (US East Coast Time Zone) - Part-Time


Job description

Type Electives is looking for a part-time, remote Graphic Design & Communications Specialist to help with marketing efforts, including promoting the school’s upcoming courses and live events. You’ll work directly with the program directors to create content and manage communications across our digital platforms.

  • You’re a type nerd who loves staying up to date with the latest news in type and graphic design

  • You’re comfortable on platforms like Instagram, Mastodon, Facebook, LinkedIn, Notion, Eventbrite, and Substack

  • You’re comfortable writing newsletters, press releases, or event announcements

  • You enjoy engaging with a creative community and getting others excited about design

  • You’re interested in education and believe in the Type Electives mission

  • You love learning and collaborating

Requirements

  • Able to communicate with staff during East Coast U.S. business hours (specific days/hours are flexible)

  • Fluent in written and spoken English

  • You meet one of the following:

    1. You are a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S. as an independent contractor

    2. You are not a U.S. Citizen but are aware of potential U.S. tax responsibilities as an independent contractor receiving income from the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Design visual assets for web, email, social media, and events (using templates and original layouts)

  • Plan, schedule, and post content across social media platforms

  • Write and send newsletters, press releases, and other public communications

  • Manage and update events on platforms like Eventbrite and Substack

  • Collaborate with directors to prioritize and track weekly tasks

  • Respond to email inquiries, using templates or creating new responses as needed

  • Take meeting notes and organize internal content in Notion and Google Drive

Qualifications

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented

  • Excellent communication skills and professional email etiquette

  • Experience writing for social media, newsletters, or public-facing materials

  • Experience creating visual assets for digital platforms

  • Ability to manage tasks and meet weekly deadlines

  • Ability to take and organize meeting notes

  • Basic knowledge of typography or design

  • Proficiency with:

    • Google Workspace (Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets)

    • Notion

    • Substack

  • Entry-level proficiency in industry standard design software such as Figma, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator (must be comfortable working with templates)

Extras

  • Experience in design education and/or community organizing. Examples include: teacher or teaching assistant, community or event organizer, etc.

  • Fluent in one or more languages besides English

  • Intermediate+ skills in industry standard design software (such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Figma)

  • Experience with Adobe After Effects

  • Experience designing event graphics & templates

Benefits

This role is a part-time contract position for the duration of two months. You will be expected to work about 10 hours per week at the rate of $20/hour for a total of $1600 over the course of the semester. You are also welcome to participate in a class of your choice for free if you wish as well.
