Type Electives Lecture Series:

Join us for a series of insightful conversations exploring the challenges of language support, diacritic design, and the role of type design in language revitalization. Our guests will share their experiences designing for diverse languages and scripts, offering both practical insights and critical perspectives.

In this session, we’ll speak with Lisa Huang about Words of Type, an online platform and encyclopedia with the mission of making typography more inclusive across languages, regions, and communities. We’ll explore cultural and design considerations in multilingual and multiscript type, including how type education can better support diverse design communities. Lisa will share the story behind Words of Type, the values that guide it, and her vision for a more inclusive future. We’ll also explore questions such as: What is missing from traditional typography education? How can designers work more effectively with multilingual resources? What new possibilities emerge when linguistic diversity is centered in design?

This session will feature a short presentation, followed by a conversation moderated by Juan and Lynne, and an open Q&A for the attendees.

Lisa Huang

Lisa Huang (she/her) is a French and Chinese typeface designer specializing in Latin and Chinese Hanzi scripts, currently based in Nantes, France. She graduated with a Master’s degree in graphic design in Paris, and pursued a specialization in type design with Type@Cooper Condensed, and TypeMedia at KABK. As she grew up with Chinese and French cultures simultaneously in cosmopolitan Paris, finding ways to connect cultures and people has always been in her mind. And in 2023, she founded Words of Type to connect these, but in the realm of typography. Words of Type as been awarded as a TDC71 winner in 2025.
